Our Story

Not Just an
Ordinary Love Story

It was Summer 2018 when Julia started her internship at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Seattle. Having already worked there for nearly a year, Ryan was tasked with giving the new girl a tour of the office. It was instantly clear that they would get along! Julia was intrigued by Ryan's quick wit and thankful for his consolation regarding the Diamond Hog's recent loss in the College World Series Championship. Ryan was impressed with Julia's knowledge of sports, and thought it was weird that she didn't have a Southern accent. They were fast friends.

Both being new transplants to the Seattle area, they would frequently go on adventures together. After numerous hikes, bouldering sessions, and culinary experiences, it was obvious that their friendship was destined for something more. Fast forward a few years, and now they're  inseparable!  Both of them found the perfect person with whom to do life!  Yay!

Julia and Ryan enjoy outdoorsy activities, attending Seattle sporting events (Go Sounders, Mariners, and Kraken, but definitely NOT Seahawks!), cooking, and spoiling their beloved Brittany Spaniel, Stella.

Julia and Ryan are so excited to start this next chapter in their lives and can't wait to celebrate with y'all this summer!

Q&A with the
Couple

Q: Where did you meet?

A:   Julia -

"We met at work! It was quite the whirlwind office romance, HA. Crazily enough, Ryan was actually the very first person that I met in Seattle. Who would have known that he would be the most important?! Funny how life works like that!"

Q: WhAT WAS YOUR FIRST DATE?

A:   Ryan -

"Our initial dates were pretty informal, but knowing that Julia was a sports fan, I took her to a Mariners game! I honestly can’t remember if the Mariners won or lost, because it was just such a good time. Afterwards, we walked to a Mexican restaurant hidden in an alley downtown for some street tacos and ended up talking at a brewery for the remainder of the night. To this day we still love catching Mariners games!"

Q: WhO SAID "I LOVE YOU" FIRST?

A:   Julia -

"That would actually be Ryan! He was dropping me off at the Seattle airport for a work trip and beat me to it! I immediately said it back, of course. Since then, I have probably said it 20+ times a day out of habit…so he might have been first, but I think I have the highest 'ILY' percentage!"

Q: what was your best date?

A:   Ryan -

"I think a lot of our most memorable moments are pretty serendipitous, and this is definitely one of those. We were walking around Capitol Hill looking for a place to eat. She had always talked about how her favorite food was pasta, and I had a place in mind that I had wanted to try for a while. Looking back, it’s crazy we even got in, the place usually requires a reservation a month beforehand! But we slipped in and sat at the counter, overlooking the kitchen. We watched one of the chefs handcut tajarin and had one of the best meals to date! Spinasse is still one of our favorite date-night restaurants."

Q: How did he propose?

A:   Julia -

"I'll be honest, I had a great suspicion that it was coming, and using context clues I was able to pinpoint the exact day. I didn't exactly know the 'where' or the 'how' Ryan had worked out. Knowing that I was too keen, Ryan came up with a plan within the plan to throw me off of the specifics. I assumed he was proposing at the historic Smith Tower in downtown Seattle because we were supposed to meet our friends there. But the day prior, one of our friends asked us if we could feed his cat around the time that we were to head to Smith Tower. I was mildly annoyed, like 'doesn't he know how important today is?!' Turns out, this was just a ruse to get us to that side of town without me being suspicious. When we got back on our way, Ryan took what I thought was a wrong turn into the parking lot of Judkins Park, a park that he lived near when we first started dating. Completely thrown, he suggested we get out of the car and go on a walk. When he found a quiet spot, he dropped to one knee and asked me to marry him! I, of course, said yes! Elated, I was impressed that he was able to still surprise me! To my previous suspicion, we then headed to Smith Tower to meet friends who had gathered for celebratory drinks at the top and finished the evening with a special dinner at one of our favorite restaurants!"

Q: what is your most memorable moment?

A:   ryan -

"Obviously getting engaged was a big moment, but I’ll set that one aside as Julia just delved into that. This past summer we were given the opportunity to travel to Africa with Julia's family. I had done a lot of research before going to know what to expect. One of the animals that I wanted to see was a rhino, but soon realized that the chances of seeing one were slim-to-none in the southern Africa areas we traveled. Despite the lack of rhinos, we had an incredible time out in the bush. While on one of our final days of the trip, we were in the Kalahari Desert on a game reserve. We had just finished a sunset game drive and were gathered around a large fire having a braai (South African BBQ). Suddenly one of our hosts said she heard something in the darkness. She grabbed the flashlight, and pointed it directly at a mother rhino with her calf! I couldn't believe it, they weren’t even 50 yards away just grazing and minding their business. The entire trip I had been refusing to get my hopes up that we would see a rhino. I ran and grabbed my camera to capture some shots. Julia and I watched the rhino for nearly 10 minutes in complete awe. This moment with Julia and her family will be one that I treasure for a long time."

Q: WhO does stella love the most?

A:   Julia -

"UGH. I hate to admit it, but she is absolutely obsessed with Ryan. Just completely over the moon with him. She follows him everywhere and watches him constantly, no matter how much I try to bribe her with love and food. I can't blame her for her infatuation, he is pretty great, but it is quite frustrating. That said, Ryan has assured me that he loves me the most, though! HA!"
